Senior Underwriter - Mortgages
Location: Ireland (Hybrid)
Salary: €50,000 - €65,000 + Benefits
Start Date: Mid-May
Overview of the Role
This is a senior, hands-on underwriting position with full ownership of the underwriting function. It's suited to an experienced professional who can operate autonomously, make confident credit decisions, and influence stakeholders across the mortgage process.
You'll play a key role in delivering high-quality underwriting outcomes while also contributing to operational improvements, regulatory adherence, and the ongoing growth of the business.
This is not an entry-level role. It requires a decisive operator who can balance strong credit judgement with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Credit Assessment
- Assess, underwrite, and approve mortgage applications within mandate limits
- Conduct Approval in Principle (AIP) assessments in line with credit policy and regulatory guidelines
- Evaluate financial risk and ensure completeness and accuracy of all documentation
- Review supporting documentation including bank statements, payslips, credit reports, and tax returns
- Authorise the issuance of mortgage offer documentation
Stakeholder Management
- Act as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders
- Provide guidance on lending criteria, policy interpretation, and product knowledge
- Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships
- Communicate decisions clearly and confidently, with the ability to challenge where required
Operational & Process Improvement
- Contribute to the development and refinement of underwriting procedures
- Support regulatory compliance and internal governance standards
- Participate in initiatives to improve underwriting efficiency and turnaround times
- Support broader operational tasks and interim processes where required
Team & Business Contribution
- Collaborate within a small, high-performing team environment
- Support training and mentoring of colleagues
- Contribute to business development initiatives and product enhancements
- Assist in the rollout of new mortgage products and services
Reporting & Performance
- Deliver weekly and monthly reporting to management
- Work to agreed service levels, KPIs, and performance targets
- Maintain high standards of underwriting quality and turnaround times

- Take full ownership of the underwriting function with a high degree of autonomy
- Demonstrate flexibility in supporting ad hoc operational and strategic initiatives
- Balance strong technical underwriting ability with excellent interpersonal skills

Qualifications & Experience
- APA / QFA (or equivalent) essential
- Extensive experience in mortgage underwriting and credit assessment
- Strong knowledge of mortgage lending and regulatory frameworks
- Third-level qualification in finance, business, or a related discipline (preferred)
